The five gods rule Amonkhet as stewards, guiding the people of Naktamun while they await the return of the God-Pharaoh, who they believe created them to teach his ways and protect his followers. Each god embodies a virtue meant to prepare initiates for the afterlife as Eternals, overseeing their training, trials, and rituals. The God Trials, originally held once per solar cycle, were twisted by Nicol Bolas into a relentless cycle. Completing a trial earned an initiate a Cartouche, said to preserve their essence. The most accomplished were deemed “worthy dead” and honored by being slain by Hazoret, then sent through the Gates of the Afterlife to await Bolas’s return. In truth, this afterlife was a deception—their bodies were transformed into Eternals. With the fall of Naktamun and the death of its gods, the Trials came to an end.
